AMD hints that Microsoft could launch its next-gen Xbox in 2027

Last year, Microsoft confirmed that it was working on a next-generation Xbox console in collaboration with AMD. Now AMD is hinting that the next Xbox console, which will use AMD’s own chips, could launch in 2027.

“Development of Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox, featuring AMD’s semi-custom SoC, is progressing well to support a 2027 launch,” AMD CEO Lisa Su said on an earnings call today. The short comment is not verified by Microsoft will to launch a new Xbox in 2027, but reveals that AMD is ready to support the launch if Microsoft is ready too.

Microsoft entered into a “strategic multi-year partnership” with AMD last year that includes the pair co-engineering silicon “across our entire portfolio of devices – including our next-generation Xbox consoles in your living room and in your hands.” AMD and Microsoft are also working together to create the next generation of Xbox Cloud Gaming servers.

Microsoft has claimed that the next-gen Xbox will be some type of hybrid console and PC, with the Xbox Ally device serving as an initial foundation towards that end goal. “The next-gen console will be a very premium, very high-end curated experience,” Xbox president Sarah Bond said in October.

Microsoft hasn’t put a date on its next-gen Xbox, and documents have been leaked as part of it FTC v. Microsoft the case initially pointed to a potential release in 2028. These documents, which no longer reflect current plans, mentioned the use of AMD’s own CPU and a co-designed AMD GPU.
