Apple has added a new “Repair Assistant” to iOS 18, the latest update for compatible iPhones to help users better manage used original parts when repairing their phone.
First reported in April, MacRumors has since revealed more details about the tool. With “Repair Assistant”, users can now pair original parts such as display, battery, camera module and more with the iPhone themselves or through a third-party repair provider. Previously, this step of the repair process was handled by Apple, but iOS 18 allows users to complete the step on their own. Apple says the “Repair Assistant” only works with iPhone 12 and later models.
In addition, iOS 18 allows users to check any spare parts by going to Settings > O > Spare parts and service.
This update is full of new features, including the ability to customize your home screen with dark app icons, as well as the ability to place your apps anywhere. iOS 18 is scheduled to be released later today for compatible iPhones.
A win for everyone, especially retail workers
In what felt like a past life, I worked as tech support for a phone store, solving software problems on countless smartphones and tablets. Customers often brought in iPhones that could not be repaired on site. In these cases, we had to send the handset in for diagnosis through the store’s repair program. Once the technician looked at the iPhone, we would get a quote for the repair. If the customer accepted, the device would be repaired — but the entire process would take at least three weeks.
Being without a device like an iPhone for so long is frustrating, especially if it’s used for work. From experience, retail staff have often borne the brunt of customer frustration with these long delivery times.
Now, with the “Repair Assistant” in iOS 18, that frustration is mostly a thing of the past. Customers will have more flexibility when repairing their iPhones, as third-party repair shops will be able to pair a used genuine part without having to send the device to Apple. This reduces the risk of parts compatibility issues and saves valuable customer time.
Ultimately, this new change will benefit everyone. Customers will enjoy faster repairs and retail staff can guide them to local repair services – or, if satisfied, customers can purchase the part and attempt the repair themselves.
