Tim Cook talks succession, executive departures during all-hands meeting – 9to5Mac

Apple CEO Tim Cook held a wide-ranging meeting today, taking questions from Apple employees and touching on key topics including immigration in the United States.

As stated by Mark Gurman at Bloombergsuccession is another topic that came up during the meeting.

Tim Cook talks retirement, leadership changes

“I spend a lot of time thinking about who’s in the room five years from now, 10 years from now. I’m obsessed with that — who’s going to be in the room 15 years from now,” Cook reportedly said during the meeting.

The comments aren’t particularly insightful or noteworthy, but they come amid growing speculation that Cook will retire within the next few years. John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, is expected to replace Cook in the role.

“This is an important part of leadership, he thinks about these things and has plans in place,” he said.

“You know, when people get to a certain age, some retire,” Cook added. “It’s kind of a natural thing.

Cook also acknowledged Apple’s 50th anniversary in April, promising employees “some kind of celebration.”

“I’ve been unusually reflective about Apple lately as we’ve been working on what we’re going to do to mark this moment,” he said. “When you really stop, stop and think about the last 50 years, it makes your heart skip a beat. It really does. I promise some celebration.”

Finally, Cook also dealt with the recent departures of managers Lisa Jackson, Jeff Williams and Katherine Adams. These departures were long planned and “didn’t come as a surprise,” according to Cook. However, Cook did not address the departures of John Giannandre and Alan Dye.
