Today in Apple history: Mac Color Classic ditches monochrome

February 10, 1993: Apple launches the Macintosh Color Classic, the company’s first compact Mac with a color display.

As the first all-in-one Mac with an integrated color display and the last American Mac to offer the compact form factor of the original model, this model represents a milestone in Macintosh development. The Color Classic unit will also become the 10 millionth Macintosh that Apple ships.

Macintosh Color Classic: The first color Mac

The Macintosh Color Classic arrived nearly a decade after Apple launched the original Mac in 1984. Looking back today, it seems amazing that the Mac Color Classic blew us away in the visual department. But it happened.

The computer’s 10-inch Sony Trinitron color display was a full inch larger than the screens of previous compact Macs. Meanwhile, its 256 colors (upgradable to thousands with the “Mystic” 68040 upgrade) looked stunningly sharp on a 512×384-pixel monitor (upgradable to 640×480).

An easily customizable Apple computer

Both of these updates reveal something great about the Mac Color Classic: It was one of the most customized and modifiable Macs in history. While early Macs prevented them from being upgraded (a strategy that will surely sound familiar to modern Apple users), the Color Classic was easy to modify.

This allowed for upgrades such as swapping in 10MB of RAM and a 32-bit 68030 CPU to extend the life of the machine. Adding to this user-friendly aspect of the Color Classic was the fact that it allowed Apple IIe emulation, courtesy of the PDS card.

While the modular Macintosh II offered an optional color screen in 1987, the Color Classic finally fulfilled the promise of the product line.

“In many ways, the Color Classic is the compact Mac that everyone has been waiting for since 1984,” he said MacUser magazine in April 1993.

The groundbreaking computer got even better six months later when Apple introduced the Mac Color Classic II. This proved frustrating for early adopters, but good for the rest of us. The sequel doubled the processor speed and RAM capacity of the original, making it a much more powerful machine. This meant that it would take longer before you had to release your upgrade tools.

Sadly, this excellent sequel was never sold in the United States. However, if you’re looking to buy the Color Classic today, this is the one you’re looking for.
