Apple was founded on April 1, 1976, which means that this year marks the company’s 50th anniversary. At a recent staff meeting, Apple CEO Tim Cook teased that Apple plans to celebrate the historic milestone.
Tim Cook has said in several interviews that Apple is not the type of company that likes to look back and live in the past. However, this 50th anniversary milestone is a big enough occasion to prompt some reflection.
As he states Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, here’s what Cook had to say about Apple’s upcoming 50th anniversary during an all-hands meeting last week:
“I’ve been unusually reflective about Apple lately because we’ve been working on what we’re going to do to commemorate this moment – 50 years. It’s an extraordinary achievement. We’ve been going through old archives, old photos. We’ve been going through products, services, people, and I’m amazed at how much Apple has changed things, how much Apple has changed the world, how much Apple has given to the world.”
Shall we go celebrate? You better believe it. We’re not ready to say exactly how yet, so stay tuned. Yes. We are not a backward-looking culture. So the group of people working on it had to build a different muscle for that, because our muscles are always about what’s next. We had to work really hard to get into a reflective state, but when you really stop, stop and think about the last 50 years, your heart skips a beat. I really do. I promised some celebration.”
Apple rarely celebrates such anniversaries, but in 2014 it launched a campaign to celebrate 30 years of the Mac. This included interviews with Apple executives, a special tribute to the home page of Apple’s website, and more.
How do you want Apple to celebrate its 50th anniversary? Do you think the celebration will be just for Apple employees, or will Apple commemorate the occasion publicly? Let us know down in the comments.
