Apple’s AutoCorrect on iPhone and iPad always aims to help when you’re typing, but it’s by no means perfect, and some of the replacements it keeps churning out can be frustrating. Fortunately, Apple’s software includes a feature called Text Replacement that lets you specify what word or phrase will replace the specific text you type.
Even if you haven’t set up the Text Replacement feature, you can try it with Apple’s preset example: In any app that accepts text input, type “Omw” followed by a space and it will change to “On the way!” automatically.
The following steps will guide you through the process of setting up your own handy shorthand phrases with text replacement on both iOS and Mac devices.
How to set up text replacement on iPhone
- Run it Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap General ➝ Keyboard.
- Tap Text replacement.

- Tap the most (+) in the upper right corner of the screen.
- On the next screen, fill in the “Phrase” field with the text you want to appear whenever you type the shortcut.
- In the “Abbreviation” field, enter the text of your choice to replace the above phrase.
- Tap Impose in the upper right corner to finish.

How to set up text replacement on Mac
The following steps work on Macs running macOS Ventura and later.
- On a Mac, click the logo in the upper-left corner of the menu bar at the top of the screen and select System settings….
- Scroll down and select Keyboard in the sidebar.
- In the Text input section, click on Text replacements….

- Click on + button to add text replacement.

- In the “Replace” column, enter the text you want to replace with something else.
- In the “S” column, enter the replacement text you want to change the text to.

If you use the same Apple account on all your Apple devices, any text replacement you add on your Mac will automatically sync with your iPhone and/or iPad, and vice versa.
