With Apple’s second-generation AirTags now widely available, we’re already seeing supplies of the first-generation model start to dwindle. Example? Amazon no longer sells a single AirTag, and it’s unclear when — or if — the retailer will restock the first-generation model. Luckily, you can still get a four-pack of the first-gen location trackers for around $64 ($35 off) at Amazon, Walmart, and Best Buy for Presidents Day, which is $2 off the best price on the bundle to date. If you just want one, you can also buy one tracker at Walmart for $17 ($12 off).
If you’re an iPhone owner, you’d be hard-pressed to find another tracker as accurate or useful as Apple’s AirTag. That’s because, like the second-generation model, the original can take advantage of Apple’s extensive Find My network and use ultra-wideband (UWB) technology. All you have to do is open the Find app on your phone and follow the arrows, sounds or vibrations on the screen to guide you to the exact location of your object, even if it slipped between your car seats. That’s a level of accuracy that many rival trackers, especially Tile’s, lack.
In addition to the aforementioned software benefits, Apple’s handy location tracking tools are built to last. The battery can last up to a year, and when it dies, just replace the standard CR2032 cell instead of replacing the tracker entirely. Each AirTag is also IP67 rated, meaning it can withstand dust and light rain.
If you use the last-generation AirTag instead of the newer model, you’ll lose some features, including an improved UWB chip that allows for more accurate location tracking. The second-generation version can also help you track objects further away, and the speaker is 50 percent louder. But if you’re looking to save some cash, the original is still one of the best trackers on the market and definitely worth picking up while you still can.
