In today’s edition of the Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman shared a number of new details about Apple’s upcoming software release: iOS 27. The company’s goal is to “clean up” the codebase, upgrade older apps, and tweak Liquid Glass — and battery life should hopefully improve as a result.
It was previously reported that iOS 27 will mostly focus on performance and stability improvements. However, today’s report contains three key details about how the company will achieve this:
- Removing ‘snippets’ of old code
- Some interface “tweaks” but nothing massive
- Gently upgrading old apps to “work better”
In the report, Gurman describes iOS as “a bit of a mess under the hood.” If you’ve used any Apple software in recent years – you’ve definitely noticed an increase in bugs, occasional poor performance, and lower battery life. The quality of Apple’s software used to be one of its strengths, so the recent decline was at times disappointing, to say the least.
After all this code cleanup, Gurman reports that engineers are also working on better battery life:
The company hopes that the underlying code changes will lead to efficiency gains that will ultimately bring more juice to users. If Apple does indeed make these improvements, it’s unclear whether the company will roll out the changes — or if it’s just a benefit of cleaning things up.
Finally, Apple is also focusing on improving AI features in iOS 27. Bloomberg announced that some of Apple’s key Siri promises made at WWDC 2024 will be delayed to iOS 27. We’ve also heard that Apple is working on a Siri chatbot of sorts for iOS 27, though there’s likely to be more to come as we get closer to the keynote in June.
