Apple Music and TikTok are bringing together two new features for the short video app. First, the companies are beta testing the ability to play an entire song in the TikTok app using Apple Music. The two are also working on a Listening Party feature that will allow fans to listen to their favorite music together.
New Apple Music + TikTok feature
The new “Play Full Song” feature is based on the Apple MusicKit platform, which allows developers to integrate Apple Music into their own applications.
The idea behind this new feature is to make it easier for TikTok users to discover new music and start listening to it instantly without leaving the TikTok app. An Apple Music subscription is required for this feature.
Apple Music is still the source of the music, and playback in the TikTok app is clearly marked “From Apple Music”. This also means that Apple Music still pays royalties and manages the licenses for all the music.
Second, TikTok and Apple are beta testing a new Listening Party feature, 9to5Mac’s source reports. This feature will allow fans to listen to music together in a community environment. It sounds like a modernized version of the now-defunct Turntable.fm service that allows users to stream music together.
Both of these features are currently being beta tested by TikTok and Apple Music, so they aren’t available to everyone just yet.
This is not the first time that Apple and TikTok have collaborated. In 2023, TikTok added the ability to quickly save songs discovered in the app to your Apple Music library. In 2024, Apple Music added support for sharing a song from the Music app to TikTok.
Apple Music is also now offering a free three-month trial available until February 24.
