For years, the best Mac for most people has been the MacBook Air. But that may soon change, as a revival of the “MacBook” without extensions is coming soon.
Apple’s latest “MacBook” tried and failed to dethrone the MacBook Air

The last time Apple launched a new ‘MacBook’ was in 2015, and this product seemed to be clearly aiming to dethrone the MacBook Air.
Like the Air, this new MacBook has specialized in being thin and light, eliminating ports and introducing a completely new look that defines the future of Mac design.
But despite gaining some loyal fans, the MacBook never caught on with the general public. Instead, most users preferred to keep the cheaper MacBook Air.
However, in just a few weeks, Apple has reportedly re-launched the all-new MacBook.
More than a decade after the debut of the last MacBook, I think this successor has a much better chance of dethroning the MacBook Air and becoming the new default Mac for most.
The new MacBook could prove popular thanks to its low price, fun colors and decent specs

For most people looking for a new computer, whether for school, work or just personal use, the new MacBook will be hard to beat.
Part of this is due to price, with the MacBook expected to cost significantly less than the MacBook Air. Analysts estimate that the new one could cost around $699.
It’s also because of the “fun colors” that make the device stand out. With Cosmic Orange on the iPhone 17 Pro, we’ve seen just how much color can drive sales.
But mostly, it’s because the MacBook can handle all the things most people are looking for:
- basic web browsing
- sending messages
- text editor, tables, slides
- and other common computing tasks
The MacBook’s deep integration with the iPhone will be another key selling point, especially for iPhone owners who currently use a PC or Chromebook.
Apple’s A18 Pro chip with the expected 8GB of RAM might not be enough for some, but I doubt any “average consumer” would find it problematic.
It’s pretty simple: if you can get a MacBook that’s by far the most affordable, comes in fun colors, and will do everything you want—why would you choose anything else?
If you’re a longtime Mac user, and especially if you consider yourself a “power user,” the upcoming MacBook probably isn’t the computer for you.
But for everyone else? It was hard to resist the MacBook.
Do you expect the new MacBook to be popular? Why or why not? Let us know in the comments.
