Polestar aims to shake off the EV doldrums with 4 new models in 3 years

The Swedish carmaker, which is owned by China’s Geely, said it will start delivering its Polestar 5 grand tourer to customers this summer, followed by the new Polestar 4 long-roof variant in the fourth quarter. At the beginning of 2027, the production of the “new successor” Polestar 2 will begin. And in 2028, the company plans to release a compact premium SUV as the Polestar 7.

The news comes after Polestar reported strong sales growth in 2025, with the automaker’s full-year sales reaching around 60,119 vehicles, a 34 percent increase over 2024. And while sales for the first nine months of 2025 rose 49 percent to $2.17 billion, the company reported a significant net loss of $1.558 billion for the same period.

Geely has stepped forward several times to support Polestar with equity investments and loan guarantees. Polestar hopes that these lower-cost updates — a Polestar 4 body makeover, a Polestar 2 revival — can continue to fuel sales growth while reining in the company’s losses.

First on the list is the Polestar 5, which boasts a 460-mile range, 800-volt ultra-fast charging architecture, 884 horsepower and 0-60 mph in 3.1 seconds on Performance trim. Polestar CEO Michael Longscheller calls the 5 “our signature halo car that brings a new level of performance and luxury to the grand-tourer segment.” The four-door GT is expected to cost more than $120,000 at launch.

The Polestar 4, which is already causing controversy due to the absence of a rear windscreen, is being redesigned to become more of a station wagon or station wagon for European customers. “Sweden is known for its station wagons and its SUVs are world-class,” says Longscheller in a press release. “We combine the space of a station wagon and the versatility of an SUV with the dynamic performance that is Polestar.”

Polestar stopped taking orders for the Polestar 2 last year, sparking fears that it was discontinuing the electric cars that put the brand on the map. Now, Longscheller says the company is working at “record speed” to bring the next-generation version 2 to market in early 2027.

Finally, the Polestar 7 SUV will compete with “the biggest EV segment in Europe,” which is compact SUVs, says Longscheller: “We are confident that we can offer customers a progressive car with high performance at a very attractive price, made in Europe.”
