The Easy Way to Avoid the Ultimate Texting Confusion (Pro Tip)

Accidentally texting the wrong person can have disastrous consequences, yet it’s incredibly easy to switch threads. Fortunately, iOS 26 offers a great way to keep things organized: You can add specific backgrounds to different Messages conversations on your iPhone so you can easily distinguish them.

For example, if you set a sparkling blue background for your group chat with coworkers, you’ll never mistake that conversation for a sensitive one-on-one text with your closest colleague. Never accidentally send your boss a message meant for your partner if the chats look obviously different.

Setting the message background for iPhone is very easy – here’s how it works.

How to Add Custom Message Backgrounds for iPhone

Apple adds fun new features to the Messages app for iPhone every year. This time around, one of the biggest new features is something other messaging apps have had for a while: custom backgrounds.

iPhone Messages backgrounds provide a great way to personalize a particular chat. Just as you can give a group chat a specific name and an image that will be visible to everyone, you can do the same with the background.

However, this feature goes beyond aesthetics and can serve a very functional purpose: If you set a specific background for a specific person or group, it will be visually obvious who you’re texting. Using a different background for different conversations reduces the chance of getting confused and sending an awkward message to the wrong person or group.

Note: Apple added message backgrounds for the iPhone in iOS 26. You can set any background you want, but the other person won’t see it unless they’re also using iOS 26. Also, custom backgrounds only work in iMessage groups — not the green bubble conversations that include Android owners.

Apple offers four built-in animations:

  • Color shows abstract colored waves, slowly undulating like a lava lamp. Choose between Mango, Ice, Plum, Deep Sea, Green Apple, Cherry, Bubblegum, Tangerine, Magenta, Lime, Silver, Carbon and Stone. If you want to choose your own colors, click on the color boxes at the bottom left and right.
  • sky shows a clear horizon with a few clouds slowly drifting by. You can tweak it with options like Dusk, Haze, Sunset, Clear, Sunrise, and Dawn.
  • Water shows some sand at the bottom of a shallow body of water with blue light refracting on the surface. You can choose between Light and Dark.
  • Aurora shows the Northern Lights dancing in the night sky. Apple offers you three color options: green, purple and pink.

Want to make iPhone message backgrounds even more personal? You can use an image from the Photos library. Tap Photo choose one. By default, it opens to the Featured section, which only shows featured photos. Tap All in the upper left corner and choose your own. Or search Collections tab to quickly find the one you’re looking for.

You can browse a list of suggested photos below in the Suggestions section. Similar to the system that automatically selects photos on the lock screen, it will search your photo library for the best potential backgrounds.

Click on the photo to see a preview of what it will look like as your iPhone news background. If you want, you can swipe left and right to apply color filters. Once you find an image you like, tap Done (blue check mark) in the upper right corner to save.

Generate your own message backgrounds with Image Playground on your iPhone

Apple also lets you use Image Playground, its stunning AI image generator, to create your own message backgrounds on your iPhone. I’m usually not thrilled with the results, but if you want to give it a shot, click Playground. Then enter a prompt to get started and Image Playground will start generating images. You can add additional short prompts to edit your image or tap one of the suggestions at the bottom of the screen. Go through the options and Apple’s AI will keep generating more. Tap Done (blue check mark) in the upper right corner to save the one you like.

Note: This feature is limited to devices that support Apple Intelligence — iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 or later.

If you want to turn off the message background on your iPhone (maybe if someone sets it to the Image Playground hideousness), you can. Simply tap on the name of the contact or group at the top, tap on Backgroundand then tap on No. This will restore the default white or black background.

If other people insist on having backgrounds but you’re not a fan, you can disable this feature entirely. Go to Settings > Apps > Messagesscroll down and turn off Conversation background. Other people can still set the background to whatever they want, but it will never show up for you.
