DuckDuckGo Introduces AI Image Editing on Duck.ai – 9to5Mac

After adding image generation to Duck.ai late last year, DuckDuckGo is now introducing image editing capabilities for its private AI chatbot. Here’s how it works.

The AI-first approach to image editing

DuckDuckGo announced today that Duck.ai, its private chatbot interface, can now edit images based on user prompts, for free, without the need for an account. However, DuckDuckGo subscribers get higher daily limits.

With this feature, users can now choose New picture from the side menu and either click on Start with a picture or simply drag and drop an image (JPEG, JPG, PNG or WebP) into the prompt box. From there, they can describe the adjustments they’d like to see on the image, and the OpenAI base model will take over from there.

As with the image generator, DuckDuckGo notes that all image metadata as well as the user’s IP address are removed before sharing the challenge with OpenAI, which provides the underlying model. 9to5Mac asked DuckDuckGo whether the resulting images are tagged with C2PA-compliant metadata and will update this post when we hear back.

In any case, according to DuckDuckGo, another privacy-friendly touch is that “uploaded images are stored locally on your device,” further ensuring user privacy.

Finally, DuckDuckGo reminds users that Duck.ai is a platform independent of the main DuckDuckGo search engine, so users who don’t feel comfortable with AI (or simply don’t want to use it) in conjunction with their search habits can access the AI-free search interface at noai.duckduckgo.com.

DuckDuckGo recently conducted a survey that found that the vast majority of respondents do not want artificial intelligence features added to their search tools. In response, the company took pains to emphasize that every AI-related feature is optional, sticking to its privacy-first approach with any new tool or rollout like today’s.
