Apple Studio Display 2: Coming soon
The Apple Studio Display is a premium 27-inch 5K monitor designed to bring clarity, color accuracy and sophistication to any Mac setup. Plus, it packs extras including a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera, a high-fidelity six-speaker surround sound system and a studio-quality three-microphone array.
As good as it is, the screen was already launched in 2022, so there is room for improvement. And it seems that the new model is not far away.
“Studio displays are now ready to ship,” he wrote BloombergMark Gurman in his Sunday edition Turn on bulletin. “It’s also worth noting that Apple retail stores around the world are facing an extreme shortage of external monitors – a sign that an update is coming soon.”
In addition, a new model of the monitor under an as yet unreleased model number has recently appeared in Chinese certification databases. It is generally considered to correspond to Studio Display 2.
3 major screen improvements
While the original Studio Display certainly looks beautiful, it’s a traditional IPS LCD. The second generation model improves it by switching to mini-LED backlighting. This type of screen uses thousands of tiny LEDs that provide the LCD backlight and illuminate very specific areas. The result is a screen with higher contrast, blacker blacks and improved brightness.
In addition, Apple Studio Display 2 is said to support high dynamic range, not just standard dynamic range. HDR expands the range between the darkest shades of black and the brightest lights that a screen can display. It also supports a wider color gamut and higher peak brightness than SDR. In short, everything shown seems more alive and cinematic.
And if that’s not enough, leaks and references to internal code point to a screen supporting 120Hz ProMotion variable refresh, similar to the MacBook Pro and iPad Pro displays. However, competing leaks claim a refresh rate of up to 90Hz. However, both would improve the current models’ 60Hz refresh rate.
Apple may release more than one configuration of the Apple Studio Display 2. References to displays with code numbers J427 and J527 appeared in the recently released macOS Tahoe 26.3. There could be a standard version and a higher variant with mini-LED and other features. There’s even hope for a bigger screen option, though no leaks have indicated that.
Studio Display 2: More improvements
Apple Studio Display needs a processor because it runs on its own iOS-based operating system. Its camera and audio functions work independently without burdening the Mac to which the display is connected. The original model uses the A13 Bionic from 2019. The upcoming version is expected to be upgraded with the A19 chip, which was only released last year.
And with years between upgrades, it’s possible that Apple will upgrade the speakers in the Studio Display 2. But that’s speculation.
While the internal upgrades are said to be significant, the exterior design is expected to remain largely familiar, with Apple sticking with the look of the current Studio Display.
As for prices, it’s mostly just speculation. The current model starts at $1,599 in the US – that’s with a 27-inch 5K panel and a standard stand. Adding features like a mini-LED screen can add to the cost. Or it could be a standard model at today’s price and a more advanced variant at a higher price.
Still just rumours
As always with Apple, none of these details are confirmed until the company itself announces the product. Timelines, specs, and features can shift late in development or change entirely—as conflicting refresh rate leaks underscore.
However, Studio Display 2 could be just days away. Apple is expected to unveil up to five products in the days leading up to the “Special Apple Experience” on March 4.
