Apple’s glasses are expected to be unveiled next year, and a recent report says they will serve as an “all-day AI companion.” While I was once skeptical of smart glasses, here’s why I think they might be just what I want.
The latest Apple Glasses report offers feature details
Earlier this week Mark Gurman at Bloomberg reported on three wearable AI devices that Apple is developing: smart glasses, a pendant and AirPods equipped with a camera.
The main topic of the article was Apple glasses. For the Gourmet:
The goal is for the glasses to act as an all-day AI companion, capable of understanding what the user sees and does in real time.
He gives several examples, e.g.
- they will tell you the ingredients on the plate of food
- referring to actual landmarks during navigation
- adding information from the event poster directly to the calendar
- guiding users to items on their grocery list
Essentially, Apple Glasses will use built-in cameras to see everything you see and offer convenient and intelligent assistance as needed.
This is similar to what visual intelligence can offer today, but expanded and available in a much more convenient form.
And it all sounds very convincing to me.
Why Apple Glass sounds like the future

One thing that excites me about Apple glasses is that it means I won’t have to pull out my iPhone as often when I’m out and about. Thanks to Glasses’ built-in microphones and speakers, I can stay in touch with the world and ping Siri hands-free.
AI will also unlock new capabilities that aren’t possible with just an iPhone — or at least not as convenient with one.
Most of my earlier skepticism about glasses centered around one big question: the issue of social comfort.
Will enough people wear AI glasses in social settings to make it feel “normal”? I suspect this concern is the main reason Apple has a pendant in development as well.
But AirPods were initially considered unusual in a social environment and are now commonplace. If Apple designs fashionable glasses that don’t look techy, I think that will help tremendously.
Of course, Apple also needs to overcome its AI shortcomings. But that’s where the Google deal becomes so important. Apple can largely focus on its own expertise — building great products — while relying on Google’s AI help.
Over the past few years, I have seen AI chatbots become more and more important and useful in everyday life. And I have no doubt that a product like Apple Glass will follow the same trend.
Smart glasses will seem strange at first. But I suspect that as more people start wearing them and get used to the convenience of AI being ubiquitous, it might be hard to resist.
Having an AI companion that is always ready and can see what I see sounds very much like the future.
