Outage affecting all ChatGPT functionality for users
ChatGPT users began experiencing problems using the service around 3:00 PM ET, according to Down Detector.
Reported cases of the outage spiked shortly thereafter, with more than 10,000 reported cases as of 3:15 p.m. and climbing.
OpenAI’s official status page confirms that the outage is impacting every aspect of ChatGPT, including conversations, search, image generation, Codex, Atlas, and more.
Yesterday, OpenAI launched the Codex app for Mac, which proved to be very popular with CEO Sam Altman. He said he achieved more than 200,000 downloads in a day.
Today, Apple introduced an update to Xcode that adds agent coding support for both Codex and Claude.
While it is unlikely that these releases caused the current ChatGPT outage, it is possible that higher than expected Codex adoption is contributing to the problem.
