Anthropic just released the second Claude upgrade this month. Claude Sonnet 4.6 is the first upgrade of Anthropic’s medium AI model since version 4.5, which arrived in September 2025.
Anthropic says Claude Sonnet 4.6, which includes a “1M token popup,” brings “a full upgrade to the model’s coding, computing, long context reasoning, agent planning, knowledge work, and design skills.”
Sonnet 4.6 brings much improved coding skills to more of our users. Consistency improvements, guideline adherence, and more have early access developers favoring Sonnet 4.6 over its predecessor by a wide margin. They often even prefer it over our smartest November 2025 model, the Claude Opus 4.5.
Performance that would have previously required reaching for an Opus-class model – including real-world, cost-effective office tasks – is now available with Sonnet 4.6. The model also shows a big improvement in computer skills compared to previous Sonnet models.
And for Claude free tier users, Anthropic now defaults to Sonnet 4.6 and includes “file creation, connectors, skills, and compression.”
Earlier this month, Anthropic released Claude Opus 4.6 with more autonomy and better focus. Apple also recently adopted Anthropic with support for agent coding in Xcode using Claude Agent.
