At WWDC 2025, Apple revealed that it plans to allow CarPlay users to watch video via AirPlay in their vehicles when they’re not driving, and the first beta version of iOS 26.4 suggests that the feature may be nearing availability.

The original mention of the feature appeared on Apple’s CarPlay developer page in the automaker-specific section, suggesting that CarPlay with AirPlay video is something automakers will need to implement. This is probably because integration with the vehicle’s systems is needed to ensure that the feature can only be used when the vehicle is parked to avoid potential distractions while driving.

The first beta of iOS 26.4, which was deployed to developers today, includes a number of new links to ‌CarPlay‌ video playback, including features such as onboarding flows, notifications and more.

Unsurprisingly, it seems likely that Apple TV will support the ‌CarPlay‌ video feature at launch, as there are other references to interacting with the TV app while using ‌CarPlay‌, such as a message informing users that they will need to subscribe to ‌Apple TV‌ on their iPhone when they are not controlling their content.

While the new code in iOS 26.4 provides evidence that Apple is moving toward launching this feature, there are no guarantees that it will eventually be available with the public release of the update, as Apple sometimes removes code found in early betas or continues to make further updates to it before the features launch. And with automakers needing to add support on their end, it’s unclear how quickly ‌CarPlay‌ video will spread to different makes and models once the feature launches.
