A new filing revealed that Apple bought Invrs.io and acquired its assets along with its sole shareholder, founder and employee.
Following Apple’s acquisition of audio-focused startup Q.ai in January 2026, it was revealed that another, much smaller company had moved under the Apple umbrella.
Notice on the website of the European Commission that he noticed MacRumorssays the iPhone maker has acquired photonics research company Invrs.io, LLC as early as October 2025. Photonics is the science and technology of generating, controlling and detecting photons or light particles.
Invrs.io was founded in 2023 by Martin Schubert, who previously worked on reverse design programs at Google and Meta. Schubert appears to have been the sole employee and shareholder of Invrs.io, which has since been purchased by Apple.
Schubert says on his LinkedIn page that he has more than fifteen years of experience in the semiconductor and technology industries. He also claims to have issued almost a hundred patents, among other things.
He led AI-driven design projects while working at Google and Meta, and his company Invrs.io had the same overall focus.
“Invrs.io aims to advance AI-driven design with an initial focus on optics—a space critical for components in AR/VR, data centers, autonomous vehicles, and more,” according to the company’s GitHub page.
Meanwhile, the European Commission’s website explains that “Invrs develops open-source frameworks for photonics research, provides standardized simulation challenges and a public leaderboard for benchmarking and comparing design results.”
While it remains to be seen exactly how the Invrs.io acquisition will help Apple, the iPhone maker could use Schubert’s expertise to improve its camera modules, image processing hardware or other components used in Apple Vision Pro.
