Race to the IMAX cinema: Apple TV and F1 will show live races

Apple TV and IMAX have announced a program of F1 races that will be shown live across the US, starting with the Miami Grand Prix in May 2026.

“F1: The Movie” was not only Apple’s biggest movie hit to date, but it was also the top-grossing film for IMAX theaters in 2025. Now IMAX has announced a new deal with Apple TV that will bring live screenings of F1 races to “at least 50 IMAX locations nationwide.”

“Fl is a fast-growing force in sports and culture in the US, and by bringing F1 on Apple TV live to IMAX theaters across the country, we’re bringing energy and excitement to even more screens in a truly immersive way,” said Oliver Schusser, Apple’s vice president of music, sports and Beats. “We are thrilled to partner with IMAX to expand access to F1 on Apple TV and give fans across the US a powerful new way to experience the speed and spectacle that the sport provides.”

IMAX describes it as a first-of-its-kind collaboration and says five Grand Prix will be screened live from May to October 2026:

  • Miami Grand Prix May 3, 2026
  • Monaco Grand Prix June 7, 2026
  • British Grand Prix (Silverstone) 5 July 2026
  • Italian Grand Prix (Monza) September 6, 2026
  • United States Grand Prix (Austin) October 25, 2026

“F1: the Movie” was shot with IMAX-certified digital cameras. IMAX screenings alone brought in $97.6 million worldwide.

“Apple TV and Joe Kosinski’s brilliant ‘F1: The Movie’ proved without a doubt that the speed, precision and artistry of Formula 1 translate beautifully to the IMAX Experience,” said Jonathan Fischer, Chief Content Officer at IMAX. “We are very pleased to deepen our partnership with Apple and offer fans more of what resonated so deeply with this film by bringing them live F1 racing in IMAX.”

As well as speculation about the possibility of an “F1” sequel, the announcement follows the film’s August 2025 IMAX re-release.
