WhatsApp Web starts rolling out voice and video calls – 9to5Mac

The feature is now starting to roll out to WhatsApp Web beta users, with a wider rollout expected in the coming weeks. Here’s how it works.

We are now launching the beta version to users

a few weeks ago WABetaInfo said that Meta is preparing to bring voice and video calling to group chats on WhatsApp, a feature that was previously limited to the platform’s official desktop apps.

Now, the website reports that the feature is starting to roll out to users enrolled in the WhatsApp beta program, starting with one-on-one chats.

This means that while web voice and video calls in group chats remain in development, WhatsApp Web beta testers are now starting to get access to calling in one-on-one conversations.

Here is WABetaInfo:

“This feature has been in development for about a year, during which time WhatsApp has refined the experience to match the features offered by the desktop apps. This first rollout focuses on one-to-one chats, allowing users to make voice and video calls without installing the desktop app. Users can simply open a chat and click the call button.”

The report states that, just like on iOS, end-to-end web calls are encrypted using the Signal protocol. It is possible to use the Screen Share function for video calls.

Finally, WABetaInfo says that while the initial rollout appears to be exclusive to users enrolled in the WhatsApp Web beta testing program, the platform will “roll the feature out to more users and non-beta users” over the next few weeks.

As for group calls, there is still no estimated arrival time on the WhatsApp website. However, once the feature launches, it is expected to support voice and video calls with up to 32 participants, along with call links and scheduled calls.

To sign up for the WhatsApp Web beta program, click on Settings > Help and Feedbackand then toggle the “Join Beta” switch. While it’s not guaranteed that you’ll get instant access to voice and video calls on the web right from the start, you’ll likely be among the first to receive the new WhatsApp web features as they roll out.
